Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player won his maiden championship for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.

The Russian, a former world number one, has had a torrid year, winning just one match at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the American major.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and issues with his service game in specific - led to him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually splitting with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the past month - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

This marks the player's first title since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface after spring of the previous year.

The win also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children simultaneously, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I won when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six finals, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

The player's retrieving play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had led some to doubt if his capacity to play at the top level was concluded.

But the player has altered his approach in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and compete positively, reinforced by an improved serving game.

He came back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging opponent, winning four of the last five points to gain the advantage.

The competitors traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, striving for his first professional championship, seized the initiative to force a final set.

Moutet saved four early-game chances in a close final set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.

Suitably, he clinched the title with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
