The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
